Make Rice Cooking Easier, Tastier and Healthier with A Pure-Clay Rice Cooker

When cooking rice, there are many concerns you might have, like wanting to make it soft and fluffy, keeping grains separate and making sure all the rice cooks evenly. There is, however, one more thing that is important – cooking it in the healthiest way possible.

As rice is usually cooked in metal/ceramic pots, there are many ways it renders unhealthy.  First of all, metals are reactive at cooking temperatures, leach into food and contaminate it. These metal ions — toxins from food accumulate in organs and blood to cause serious health problems over time.

Secondly, their heat is damaging to the delicate nutrients in food. Rice and other grains are made of simple carbs, complex carbs, vitamins and minerals, the more potent the nutrients the more delicate and subject to damage they are.  So, the complex carbs, and vitamins and mineral barely survive the ordeal.  No wonder diabetes is a pandemic of this era.  When the body is provided a depleted diet with an excess of simple carbs, it leads to the mismanagement of the insulin hormone leading to diabetes.

Lastly, heat is not distributed evenly. The temperature is high at the bottom, so the rice needs to be stirred constantly.  All these factors make cooking rice complex and unhealthy.

Miriam’s Earthen Cookware’s pure-clay pots are the healthier alternatives. They are made of pure-clay that is proven to be 100% non-toxic as it is free from metals or chemicals. The breathable pot lets excess moisture evaporate. Thus, the rice cooks fluffy, soft and each grain separate from the other!

The unique far infrared heat penetrates deeper into the grains and cooks them evenly just at medium heat. “The rice cooks even before the water fully boils”, says Alisa, an avid rice eater, and passionate pure-Clay cook. There is no need to add any oil or other fats to get grains to separate or taste better, just cook it in pure-clay and the pot will take care of the rest!

So when looking to cook your healthiest rice, brown rice, quinoa or any other grain, choose the right grains – not excessively processed, bleached or enriched AND cook it in the ideal rice cooker.  One that will cook without destroying nutrients and without adding its own toxins to the food… Cooks it thoroughly & evenly, making it the best rice you’ve ever tasted!

Things to Keep in Mind While Choosing the Safest Cookware

Looking at the profit-oriented approach of the cookware selling businesses, it’d be foolish to rely on catchy advertisements and their baseless claims of being the best. You need to keep a few things in mind while choosing the best cookware, irrespective of what is popular in the market.

For the sake of your health and that of your family’s, you need to be very careful while choosing the safest cookware. Following are the things you should keep in mind before you make a choice:

Composition:

Majority of conventional cookware are composed of metals (Stainless Steel, Iron or Aluminum), or ceramic. Most of them are also glazed with chemicals and enamels or coated with non-stick materials like Teflon. All metals are reactive and thus, have a tendency to leach into your food while cooking. Eating such food is harmful to you and your family’s health. Over time these toxins get accumulated in your organs and blood and contribute to sicknesses, allergies and many diseases.

Effect on nutritional value of food:

Few people are aware that metal cookware destroys the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in your food. If you try to touch a metal pan while cooking, it burns your fingers. It does exactly the same to food (plants, legumes, meat) that is made up of tissues just like we are made of living tissues. The pot’s heat diminishes the nutritional value by damaging these nutritional cells.

Loss of steam-Loss of water soluble nutrients:

Another important thing to keep in mind is what happens to steam during cooking. Steam is essentially water-soluble nutrients (Foliate, thiamin, riboflavin, Niacin etc.,) these support heart health, the bones and other systems important for the body’s functioning. Most of it is lost with conventional cookware and their easy vented lids. Even in the case of a pressure cookware where steam is supposedly locked inside, all of it needs to be released before opening the lid.

Manufacturing Process:

The way your cookware is manufactured plays an important role in keeping it safe for your health and that of the environment’s. Most commercial cookware (ceramic, metal) are usually processed with chemicals as they need to be made in a mechanized process. As discussed earlier, these chemicals also leach into food while cooking. Additionally, the metals are mined, thereby causing great damage to the environment through water pollution and deforestation, etc.

So, which is the safest cookware?

Miriam’s Earthen Cookware is an all-natural brand known for making the safest cookware from 100% tested pure raw material — pure-clay. It fulfills all the conditions of the safest cookware:

  1. It doesn’t leach any toxins into food as it is free from metals and chemicals.
  2. It cooks with a unique far infrared heat that penetrates deep into food without destroying the nutrients.
  3. It has a natural steam-locking property that lets the steam build up gradually rises to the lid, gets naturally condensed and drops back on your food.
  4. The manufacturing process doesn’t need any chemicals as it is hand-made from 100% tested pure-clay. The raw material is harvested without causing any negative impact on the environment.

Now that you know which is the safest cookware available out there, go to Miriam’s Earthen Cookware to get what is best for your kitchen and cooking style.

Why a Pure-clay Dutch Oven Gives You an Edge Over Other Types?

It is not an exaggeration to say that a Dutch oven is one the most flexible cooking utensils in the kitchen. Some even work both on the stove top and in the oven. A variety of dishes can be prepared in it which makes it a must have for every cook’s kitchen.

When it comes to choosing the perfect Dutch oven, the few things that come to mind are the shape and size, to the weight of the utensil so that it’s easier to cook with and while serving. It may surprise you a little but when buying a utensil for cooking, the most important thing to bear in mind is what material it’s been made of?

As cooking is a chemically transformational process, food is bound to react with the material in the utensil, in this case, a Dutch oven. Most of the Dutch ovens available in the market are made up of cast iron, ceramic or other metals. You may also find a few potters who use clay to make Dutch ovens, which is a perfect material to cook safely but only if it is 100% pure. Any kind of impurity in the clay (like ceramic clay) makes it prone to leach metal ions into the food also.

Hence pure clay is the only material that is inert and safe for making a healthy Dutch oven. So why isn’t it popular? It is simply because pure clay is not available just everywhere. There are only certain places from where it can be harvested. Also, the purpose of using pure clay is defied when using machines to make them because any mechanized process, in most cases, mandates the use of chemicals in the raw material.  So, it is not something that’s commonly made.

However today there is a company bent on a sole purpose, that is to make healthy cookware for their customers.  Miriams Earthen Cookware believes a choice of good ingredients cooked in the healthiest cookware is the ideal way to become sustainably healthy.  They make some of the best dutch ovens from 100% tested pure clay cookware.

So now that you are aware of the importance of the raw material used in cookware. Go visit miriamsearthencookware.com to see which size Dutch oven would be ideal for your family and start cooking healthy meals without the interference of toxins and chemicals from the pot.  This is not all, there are many other nutritional benefits to cooking in pure-clay and their website talks about it at length!

Why should you buy Non-Toxic Cookware, How Does it Affect Your Food?

Why should you buy non-toxic cookware? The answer is simple: To prevent toxins from leaching into your food. You may think you’ve already done that by buying natural, organic foods but once you cook in that nonstick, metal, glazed or enameled pan they become contaminated by the pan/pot? Have you ever thought about this?

Not sure if you believe chemicals are leaching into your food, try this SIMPLE & SURE test for Leaching of metals/chemicals?

Ingredients needed for the test:

3-4 cups of water.

2 tbsp. of baking soda

The pots you want to test

Method:

  1. Boil 2 to 4 cups water in any metal, glazed, enameled, ceramic pot/pan you cook with.
  2.  Add 1 TBSP of baking soda to the boiling water.
  3.  After 5 to 10 minutes turn off the stove and wait for it to cool down. Take a small sip. If you experience a metallic taste your pot is leaching metal.
  4.  If you did this in a ceramic/glazed or enamel pot and get a rubbery or paint like flavor your pan is leaching chemicals.
  5.  As a control, stir the same quantity of baking soda to a glass of water and compare the taste.  You will see the difference in the taste in the different pots.

Non-toxic & safe cookware should not allow chemicals to seep into your food and should also cook without destroying nutrients.  Traditional metal/ceramic cookware cook with a very harsh form of heat that destroys the nutritive cells in food AND lets all the steam evaporate letting water soluble nutrients leave the pot.  When cooking with pots and pans made from 100% natural material such as pure-clay the food will retain its nutritional value. How is this possible? First pure clay cooks with far infrared heat which is a gentler heat that cooks without destroying nutritional cells.  Secondly,  pure clay helps to naturally lock in steam keeping the nutrients in the food as well as making it moist and flavorful.

When we think of our health we think of the food we eat and try to avoid pesticides, additives and chemicals.  How about when we buy cookware?  Do you ask what goes into this pan/pot? What additives or chemicals are used in its making? Was it made in a method that is safe for the environment?

In looking for Non-toxic & healthy cookware here’s what you need to know:

  1. Cookware made from a 100% natural renewable material is the best and most non-toxic.
  2. Pots & pans that will pollute/contaminate your food through leaching its own ingredients are Toxic!
  3. Your choice of cookware can either preserve the nutrients intact or destroy the delicate nutrients in food, so choose wisely.
  4. And finally cookware that’s made without harming the environment is the best choice for non-toxic cookware.

Make Your Cooking Even Healthier Without a Conventional Slow Cooker

For a healthy cooking, there are two main aspects to keep in mind:

  1. The food’s nutrients should remain intact
  2. The material used should be non-toxic

It’s a common belief that cooking in a slow cooker is healthier than in a normal cooker and it doesn’t destroy the nutrients as the heat is usually kept low. But scientific research has proven otherwise. A test was done on amino acid lysine found in peanuts. It was found that 20% of it was gone after cooking for an hour and a half at 150°F/66°C heat. After two and a half hours, only 60% of it was left. When cooking for long hours even at low temperatures, majority of vitamins are lost as they have less heat stability than this amino acid. So, it is proven that this low heat for a very long period of time actually damages nutrients.

In conventional slow cookers, the pots are made of metal or ceramic. When they are used to cook for long hours, they leach chemicals like Cadmium, Lead, Petalite (Lithium) and metal ions [Al-Aluminum, Ni-Nickel (steel), Ti– Titanium (steel), MO – molybdenum (steel), Cr-Chromium (steel), Fe-Iron (steel)] into your food. Food is a biochemical entity and reacts with these ions while heat acts as a catalyst. This process makes the food toxic. The accumulation of these toxins over time may cause various health problems like common sicknesses, allergies, joint and muscle aches, and diseases like Alzheimer or even Cancer. So, it is very important that the material used in making slow cookers is 100% pure and doesn’t leach in.

Miriam’s Earthen Cookware have a healthy alternative that is not only 100% safe but is also more efficient. They make pots from tested and certified pure-clay that doesn’t leach in chemicals or metals and the best part is – they greatly reduce cooking time! Recipes that take around 6-8 hours in a slow cooker, are cooked in just 40-50 minutes in medium heat or less. The unique far-infrared heat in MEC’s pure-clay pots help accomplish this feature.

Their pure-clay cookware is scientifically proven to be healthy and non-toxic. This should be enough reason to put them way ahead of a conventional slow cooker. It’d be a good idea to check their exclusive range of cookware and find what best suits your kitchen. While you are there, feel free to browse through their great recipes as well.

Cooking with a Pressure Cooker: Forced or Coaxed pressure?

Pressure cooker is known to be the ‘ace’ of all kitchens. A number of dishes are typically cooked in it like lentils, soaked dry beans, vegetables, and meat. These dishes usually take a long time to cook but their cooking time is greatly reduced with the pressure cooker.

A conventional pressure cooker consists of a pot made of metal such as Aluminum or Stainless Steel. It has a lid with locking mechanism that covers it perfectly and doesn’t let the steam go out. The food is forced to cook with steam pressure and heat, which reduces the cooking time but with certain consequences.

This extreme pressure destroys the delicate nutritional cells in food, leaving food nutritionally depleted.  Also, when the steam is released from the vent (this has to be done before opening the lid), essential water-soluble nutrients are lost in the steam. This is why the food cooked is so smashed and mushy.  But this is not all, things that go under the hood are even more worrisome.

At such high temperature, the metal body of the pot leach in ions and food being a biochemical entity reacts with them. Some of these metals are pretty harmful and their prolonged ingestion with food causes many chronic illnesses like Diabetes and Alzheimer. So you can see, how harmful a conventional pressure cooker can be to your food and your family’s health.

Now the question is – is there a healthy alternative? Luckily, there is.

A pressure cooker made of pure-clay is a 100% safe and healthy alternative and serves the same purpose. There are absolutely no toxins in pure-clay to contaminate food. They come with steam locker lids that do not let the steam go out. So the steam settles naturally over the food leaving the water soluble nutrients intact. Also, steam builds up gradually inside the pot and doesn’t force the food to cook with high heat and steam pressure. Instead, it coaxes the food to cook and there is no substantial increase in cooking time.

Besides, pure clay pots are easy to clean and work with. They can work both in the oven and on the stove top. To add this, the design is a lot simpler with only two parts to work with – a pot and a lid, no rubber rings, vent pipes, pressure regulators, overpressure plugs etc.

Now, the important question is – where can you get them from? That’s easy.

Miriam’s Earthen Cookware has been working for years to bring 100% tested healthy clay cookware to your families. The raw material they use is pure-clay which is scientifically proven to be safe and healthy. They have done vast research on the subject which is evident from their detailed blog posts. How Choosing Non-Toxic Pots & Pans affects the health of your Food?

The answer is simple, we buy NON-TOXIC cookware to prevent dangerous chemicals and metals from entering food while cooking! Buying organic food items by itself does not guarantee healthy and non-toxic food because once you cook that food in your nonstick, metal, glazed or enameled pot/pan they become contaminated from elements constantly leaching from these reactive cookware.

Not sure if you believe this? try this simple test for leaching from cookware:

Ingredients needed:

3-4 cups of water.

2 tbsp. of baking soda

The pots you want to test

—Boil 2-3 cups of water in any pot, when it starts boiling add 2 tsp of baking soda   Boil for 5 more mins. Turn stove off.

—Wait till cool enough to taste then taste the water (take a sip).  If you taste metals, that’s what you’re eating! If water has a rubber/paint taste it’s the chemicals from enamel/glaze.

As a control, stir 2 tsp of baking soda to 1 glass of water take a sip — you will taste just the baking soda.

Non-toxic & safe cookware should not allow chemicals to seep into your food or destroy nutrients either.  Traditional metal and ceramic cookware cook with a harsh form of heat that quickly destroys the nutritive cells in food AND let’s all the steam evaporate letting water soluble nutrients leave the pot. Why buy those great organic beets and potatoes if all their water soluble vitamins and minerals will go up in steam?

When cooking with pots and pans made from 100% natural material such as pure-clay the food will retain its nutritional value. How is this possible? First pure clay cooks with far infrared heat which is a gentler heat that doesn’t damage nutritional cells in the food.  Secondly, pure clay helps to naturally condense and lock in steam keeping the nutrients in the food intact.

Best of all cookware made from 100% Pure-clay is completely inert.  In other words, it does not leach any chemicals or metals into your food, it is non-reactive to the food cooking in the pot.

When we think of our health we think of the food we eat and try to avoid pesticides, additives (such as sweeteners, artificial colors) and chemicals (preservatives).  How about when you purchase your cookware?  Do you ask what goes into this pot? What additives or chemicals are used in its production? How does its production affect the environment?

These are important questions whose answers determine the purity, nutritional value and health of your food.

Safest Cookware 101: What Are The Dangers of Metal Cookware?

Safest Cookware

There has been a lot of buzz lately about pure-clay cookware, about how much better they are than regular, metal vessels, how much healthier. They are touted as the safest cookware with benefits such as being non-toxic, no lead or tastier food were all dangled before our eyes, but the question is what exactly are they protecting us from? People have used metal cookware for decades before this new trend penetrated the market and no one died from it. Well, in fact, they might have!

Teflon Is A Carcinogen

When Teflon pans first came out, everyone was crazy about them. Frying eggs with no butter or oil? Crazy. And the clean up process was so quick and easy. All of that came with a price! First, Teflon manufacturers advised for people not to use this cookware near birds, because these pans give off toxic fumes called PFOA, which can kill birds in a matter of minutes. Then, after further studies and considerations, the EPA Advisory Board wanted to upgrade PFOA to a substance that’s likely human carcinogen. And here are its dangers: pancreatic cancer, cancer of the male reproductive tract, abnormal testosterone regulation, damage to thyroid gland. This doesn’t sound delicious at all. You’ll never have this risk with pure clay cookware.

Aluminum Causes Alzheimer’s

This may sound like a far stretch, but it’s not actually. Aluminum pots and pans conduct heat exquisitely, but all those molecules will leach into your food. See, aluminum is a highly reactive metal and once the pan heats up, plenty of its molecules will pass onto your food. Ingesting high doses of aluminum has been connected to Alzheimer’s disease, again a risk not worth taking. On the other hand, pure clay is 100% inert, which means it won’t react with the food in any way, so you don’t have to worry about putting toxins inside your body.

Choosing The Safest

The bottom line is that people now are more aware of what goes on around them, are far more educated with regards to product consumption and far more careful with what they put inside them. And this awareness and concern have gone beyond the point of checking labels and watching for non-healthy produce but also choosing the safest cookware.

More and more people have started to understand that cookware matters too, that it affects the quality of the food they serve. Convenience and quickness are not high on the priority list anymore. Health is! This is why more and more cooks have turned way from metal vessels and started using pure clay cookware. It’s been used the world over in many countries for hundreds of years, but the American people are getting the hang of it too. And they like the results: healthier, better tasting food!

Cooking For The Family —  How Healthy Is The Food?

We all remember the times where the most important thing for kids food-wise was to eat his or her vegetables. Today, it’s not that simple anymore. Today, cooking for your kids, for your entire family in fact, has become a real challenge, because you have to take be careful of everything: what produce you buy, where you buy it from, if it’s organic or not, if it’s imported or local, how you cook it AND in what you are cooking it in. The latter aspect, that of cookware, has become more and more of an issue ever since scientists discovered that our regular pots and pans can be toxic.

Why Does The Cookware Matter?

When you are preparing your meals, you want to lay the healthiest dishes for your family and you’re mindful of preparing a wholesome meal with the best ingredients. But what good does a healthy, balanced diet do if toxins and poisonous chemicals make their way into your kids’ food? Because that’s what regular cookware does. All the chemicals and metals that were used to manufacture those amazing non-stick pans, metal pots, enameled pots and pans that you love so much, when catalyzed by heat, leach into the food that you then feed your family. [Have you tried the baking soda test for leaching of metals/chemicals into food from cookware?] It doesn’t matter that you only buy bio products and locally grown produce, by the time you serve your family dinner, the meal can be full of toxins leached from the cookware. So the pots and pans you use matter. They matter a great deal. Pure clay pots are the best non-toxic cookware that you can find. In fact, they’re the real thing, the one type of kitchenware that you can be absolutely sure it has no toxins or chemicals in it whatsoever.

The Fine Print

Because safe and healthy cookware has become such an issue and the topic has received much attention from the blogosphere as well, a lot of cookware began to be marketed as non-toxic or chemical-free. But as it goes with any type of advertising or labeling, it’s the fine print that makes the difference. And when it comes to the food you serve your kids, you want to read the fine print. You’ve probably heard about natural clay being the best raw material for healthy cookware and that’s true. However, there is clay cookware available on the market that’s made from un-tested secondary clay and made with the use of different chemicals and additives and some that are even glazed, all of these only completely nullifies the purpose.

To ensure you’re getting the best for your family make sure the pots and pans are made from:

  1. 100% Primary, Pure Clay
  2. The clay is tested
  3. The pots are made without the use of any chemicals or additives
  4. They are Unglazedrice in pot

Choosing the Right Dutch Oven — Which one?

best dutch ovenWhile it may seem like a mere pot to some, the Dutch oven is a versatile piece of cookware.  One can cook a myriad of meals ranging from oatmeal, soups/stews, fried foods to roast meats and breads. While these are all great uses of a Dutch oven, does it have other benefits? Is there a Dutch oven that can cook healthier meals and is kind to the environment?

The simple answer to this question is yes, there is a Dutch oven that cooks without destroying food nutrients and its composition and manufacture is eco-friendly.  This amazing vessel is a Pure Clay Dutch oven.  Pure Clay, unlike ceramics and other stone and earthenware is made from clay that is carefully selected, harvested and tested to insure its purity.

The pots are then hand made on the potter’s wheel and air dried. There is no mass production of the cookware which means there is no pollution of the air or water making the manufacture of these items 100% eco-friendly.

They’re Naturally Non-stick

Pure clay cookware has a semi-porous surface making it naturally nonstick  so there’s no need to add extra fats such as butter or oil.

Their Design Locks Steam Inside

The lid of the pure clay Dutch oven is especially important as it designed to lock in steam.  Many vitamins and nutrients found in food are water soluble, so when steam escapes the pot when cooking the vitamins leave with it. By retaining the steam inside the Dutch oven keeps the nutrients where they belong (in the food).

Cooks with Far-infrared Heat — Unique To Pure-clay

Another unique attribute that differentiates it from conventional cookware, it cooks with a different form of heat. Pure clay cooks with far infrared heat which is gentler and does not damage the nutritional cells in food. By sealing in vitamin and mineral rich steam while cooking with a heat that preserves the nutritional cells in food one can see how a Pure Clay dutch oven will enhance the health value of their meals!

Gets Better with Use

There is one more great trait that pure clay possesses, its ability to improve over time. Much like cast iron pure clay becomes “seasoned” once it is used over a period of time. Once seasoned the pure clay dutch oven will come even more non-stick, cook foods faster and become easier to clean and dry.

So when you’re on the lookout for a new Dutch oven or any piece of cookware for that matter remember the best choice that enhances your food and is kind to the earth is a pure-clay dutch oven.
